#stress
We all deal with stress of many levels and in many ways in our daily lives. As per its name it’s stressful. We all give different reactions - for some it’s completely emotional and we either internalize it or become reactive to everything; and some actually have physical reactions to stress, whether it’s nausea or skin rashes. Either way it’s not pleasant or constructive to a well-lived life. And is’t that what we want, a life well-lived with minimal confrontation and stress? While I don’t have a solution to end all stress (though that would be so cool), I wanted to share with you how I deal with managing and reducing the stress in my life (because to be honest, I’ve been dealing with a lot of stress lately).
Exercise
I never would have believed that exercise worked until the past few years, but I have to say it’s definitely one way that works very quickly and definitively for me. Maybe it’s the physical exertion, or that exercise releases endorphins and there you feel better, but there are few things that I haven’t been able to manage with an hour-long outdoor walk, a few laps in the pool or a session at the gym.
Baking
This might not work for everyone, but baking when I’m stressed or bored really helps me calm and balance myself. Maybe it’s as simple as making something with your hands, or concentrating on a new recipe (so you’re not really thinking about the stress inducing issue) or eating deliciously sweet concoctions but it feels great to trays of cookies (and later sharing with family & friends).
Cuddling with pets
Again this only works if you have pets (or you like animals), but we all know how they can reduce stress in their owners. A simple purr, a quick wagging of the tail, and the moment when they decide to cuddle up to you, makes all of the worries of the world disappear. So if you have pets, grab a hold of them and don’t let them go - play with them, go on a walk with them (that you hit two stress-reducing activities) and later on, curl on the couch with them.
Going Out
Sometimes you just need to get out of your headspace, and nothing does it quite like an afternoon or evening with friends. It doesn’t have to be fancy, it could be as simple as hitting your favorite coffee shop and just chatting away with your friends. Then on your way out get yourself some flowers just because (that really is the best kind).
Therapy
Finally nothing beats therapy. They help give us perspective in situations where we can’t find a way out, where everything seems jumbled and all the doors are closed shut. But talking with a professional helps give us tools to help us manage through, and give us solutions that seem so simple and yet something that just hadn’t occurred to us. Finding someone who is on your side but is also able to help give you a pause, chance and help to reset so that you can move forward, instead of getting lost in a loop.
It takes time and real effort to manage stress and not let it overwhelm you but I believe it is possible to have a balanced and uplifting life. So work to find out what works for you, see if any of my suggestions work out - worst case scenario, you have some cookies in the kitchen.
