Happy Thanksgiving Everyone
Now for those who celebrate this holiday….
I personally love Thanksgiving. Sure there are no presents, and the decor is mostly about table decor, but I love that it’s a time when you gather with family and friends, where everyone is cozy and comfortable. To me that’s what Thanksgiving is - cozy & comforting. Ok, maybe it’s the roasted turkey and apple pie talking but for those who grew up with this holiday, you know what I mean. Sure sometimes there is family drama but let’s face it we all need a little gossip ‘till the next family gathering anyway ;)
Since I moved back to Turkey (and technically we don’t celebrate the holiday here) I’ve hosted my own Thanksgiving for family and sometimes Friendsgiving for friends near & dear to me. And I love everything about it (except the dishes) - the cooking, the table setting, getting dressed - just everything.
Here is my fail-proof Thanksgiving guide… For the food I like to keep it simple but wholesome. This year though I made a few tweaks and added in some Turkish flair to the meal. The menu is simple enough that you can actually cook the whole menu in 1 day (trust me, I tested the theory out). If hosting for a big crew definitely go with a whole turkey but if like me I made the menu for 4 this year so that there isn’t a ton of leftovers and we can eat everything fresh. So if going for the smaller crowd definitely opt for this turkey breast recipe. Then there is the issue of gravy, I love this one from NYT Cooking: it’s incredibly simple and you can make it while the turkey is in the oven. This year rather than go with mashed potatoes or sweet potatoes I went with this really great recipe from Arda Turkmen - a very nice bulgur wheat with almonds and currants recipe! I loved how it paired with the other dishes from the menu (and the fact that it’s a wholesome dish was the cherry on top). To add some greens to the menu, I love this creamed kale & spinach dish (but I always make it with just 100% spinach to be honest). Followed with a simple mesclun salad (but I do love adding some walnuts & dried cranberries to it). Speaking of cranberries, I most certainly get cranberry sauce (but I’ll be honest here I go with a store-bought sauce and I’m satisfied with it). And followed by a wonderful apple crisp! While I do have a few tweaks to the original recipe, it’s definitely a lot easier and quicker to make than apple pie (which I save for new years eve dinner) but again, it’s cozy, wholesome and comforting.
For drinks, I’m serving up a combination of wine (both red & white) as well as a spiked apple cider (with a splash of whiskey & spring of rosemary).
Now for the clothes… looking at the menu I definitely suggest a loose fitting dress that is both cute & casual. I love this one from H&M, the colors and general cut of the dress is perfect if you’re attending or hosting so that you can be dressy & casual (and comfortable at the same time).
Finally, you’ve cooked up a storm and you’re dressed to impress, all that is left is the table setting. I fell in love with these new holiday plate collection from H&M Home that helped me set a bit of a dark & moody table setting that was inviting. Simply matched them with what I already had at home, some white mini-pumpkins to create a bit of contrast, light some unscented candles (trust me, your home already smells amazing with the menu) and enjoy. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!
