Thanksgiving in Turkey?
Now in English…
I know that we don’t technically have Thanksgiving in Turkey but after spending years in the States some traditions are bound to stick. It was always a holiday that I loved the concept of - when in school it meant 10 days off, but more importantly it meant that I got to see family members that I wouldn’t normally see, eat great food and catch-up.
Now of course back then my aunt would do the cooking and I would only design and print out the menus. But since we’re all going through a difficult time I thought it’s the perfect opportunity to celebrate Thanksgiving. You know how everyone is saying that 2020 is the year of gratitude - I can’t think of a better occasion.
This time it’s not the whole extended family but I decided to throw a mini-feast for only my parents and I. I didn’t realize how tiring it would be to prepare all of the food but thanks to NYT Cooking and What’s Gaby Cooking I managed to create a great feast! I did tweak the recipes a bit and cooked minimally so that we’re not left with a week's worth of leftovers, but I think it turned into a beautifully balanced meal.
I took out the fancy china, put on the dress that I had bought but hadn’t had a chance to wear and after cooking for two days set the table and opened up the wine!
The food aside, it was wonderful to come together and have a special sit down meal, together with our lovely cats - it really was a Thankful day. Maybe we didn’t watch the Macy’s Day Parade, or gather up the leaves in the yard after the meal, and Black Friday looked more like Black Month-long online shopping but coming together and having a Zoom meeting with those who couldn’t be there physically was a pretty good day.
Though a bit tiresome, if you can get together with the whole family for a “Zoom Meal” before the December holiday season gets here. I hope for a time when we can have face-to-face Thanksgiving and Friendsgiving celebrations in the upcoming year.
